U-S offers plan to keep multinational force in Iraq another year
UNITED NATIONS
The U-S is pushing a change at the U-N. It wants to extend the mandate of the multinational force now serving in Iraq for an additional year.
A draft resolution being circulated in the Security Council would change the current practice of requiring renewal every six months.
The current mandate for the 180-thousand troops expires after next month's legislative elections in Iraq.
Russia's ambassador says extending it for another year won't be automatic. Russia has been calling for security to be handed over to Iraqi forces as quickly as possible.
