From TED via email:
J. Craig Venter is a very successful biologist and business leader. He was the founder of Celera Genomics, a corporation that was famous for research on sequencing the human genome.
In this lecture, Venter discusses the creation the world's first artificial chromosome. He also talks about applying automation and information technology to genetics a fourth-generation biofuel, so that algae can have its DNA manipulated so it can turn sunlight and CO2 into gasoline.
The genetic engineering industry can replace the petro-chemical industy! Petroleum can become a renewable resource, instead of the finite energy source controlled by despotic and unstable governments.
