Controversial Billboards Aim To 'Stop Invasion'

SAN DIEGO -- A controversial billboard will be unveiled in San Diego Thursday as part of a campaign against illegal immigration.

The billboard, which read: "Stop The Invasion, Secure Our Borders," will be placed along Interstate 5 about a half-mile north of the U.S.-Mexico border at San Ysidro. It is being paid for by a citizen's group called Grassfire.org. The group's founder said illegal immigration is the biggest issue in California. The first of the billboards went up Wednesday near the Foothill and San Gabriel freeways near Los Angeles.
The billboards urge people to call Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein and pressure them to support tough immigration reform.
Organizers said about fifteen more billboards are planned for other parts of the state. The group already has its message on billboards in Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Florida and West Virginia.
Grassfire.org president Steve Elliott said the billboards will send a strong message to Congress as it discusses immigration reform. But some immigration advocates say the billboards are racist and inflammatory and could further unify Latinos on immigrant rights.
