NSA taps: War on this site..poster vs commentors...

Here's an excerpt from one of the commentors:

"Curiously, concerns about this NSA program would be ameliorated considerably if in fact the only people who ever got access to the phone records were in fact spooks working the terrorist problem. Realistically, 99.9999 percent of all records would be of no interest and should be purged almost immediately. Unfortunately, the nature of government won’t allow this.

Everybody in blessed agencies is going to get these records. Yeah, the drug police, the porn police, the tax police, the crime police, and oh, yeah, White House political types, they’ll all get these records. Certain blessed congresspersons will get access. It’s how it works.

My beat used to be spies and terrorists. Neither I nor my bosses cared about your sexual preferences, your tax situation or any other problems you might have. That shit’s interesting for about a month when you’re 22-years-old. After that, it just all runs together and you don’t even read it.

Unfortunately, many so-called “consumers” of intelligence really like it. This is why we had a Church Commission years ago and why we had a “wall of separation.” I hate to say it, but that wall no longer exists. Then there is the question of efficacy. There are so many telephone calls made every day in the US that one has to wonder just what can be done with the raw information, even with supercomputers. Ultimately, a human being is going to have to deal with the take; it’s my sense that we don’t have nearly enough human beings to do so. This could turn out to be an expensive technical expertise that provides little bang for the buck.

We should keep an eye on the Electronic Freedom Frontier’s lawsuit against the phone companies. They’re not using any of the FISA or intel law. They are focusing on the Communications Act of 1937 and going for monetary damages. I don’t think the government likes this suit. In this case, the EFF is going after the capitalists who are enabling questionable government conduct. Seems rather fitting in a capitalistic society."

Wrap....
