Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will shun the defense sector and create a non-profit foundation that works on issues dealing with the United States and foreign policy, according to a report in Friday's Washington Times.

"He's considering a lot of things but he wants to remain engaged in public policy issues and is in the process of creating a foundation that would involve teaching and research fellowships for graduate and post-graduate students," Larry Di Rita, Rumsfeld's former Pentagon spokesman, told Bill Gertz in his weekly "Inside the Ring" column.

Di Rita went on to say the foundation would focus on promoting "continued U.S. engagement in world affairs in furtherance of U.S. security interests."

Rumsfeld is also steering clear of working as a defense industry contractor, Di Rita insisted, arguing that, "He has no interest in that stuff," which was evidenced by his shunning of the defense sector since the 1970s when he first served as Defense Secretary.

On the question of whether or not the controversial Defense Secretary, who resigned from the Bush administration after the Republican Party's defeat in the 2006 Congressional elections, will write any memoirs, Di Rita was uncertain.

"Mr. Rumsfeld has not decided on writing his memoirs, but if he does, all proceeds would go to support the foundation," Gertz reported.

In earlier news, the Wall Street Journal had reported that Rumsfeld would be honored with a 'Statesmanship Award' from the conservative Claremont Institute in November.
